Energy
Energy plays a critical role in underpinning efforts to achieve the MDGs. Presently, there are around 2.4 billion people who lack access to clean fuels for cooking, and 1.6 billion who lack access to electricity.
Access to modern forms of energy affects all aspects of development - social, economic and environmental - and across a whole range of cross-cutting issues, including health, education, agricultural productivity, access to water and gender-related issues.
Reliable energy sources reduce the need for time and effort to be spent obtaining traditional energy supplies, for example wood for cooking and heating, allowing a switch from basic survival activities to income-generating activities - especially for women and girls.
